March. I love this month for two reasons. 1. We know that random 60-70 degree days will show up to let us know that winter is almost over. 2. It's time for post tournament season. I know that March is almost over and UC is no longer playing, but I still love seeing how the season plays out for other teams. Friday I went down to Lexington for the weekend to watch the UK vs. Louisville game. While it was so weird to be cheering for a different team, I found myself wanting to start sidelines at the restaurant we were at! Let me tell you…I have never experienced anything like this before. We all know the rivalry between these two teams is heated, but when throwing in an Elite 8 opportunity…it takes it to a whole different level y'all. It was quite the experience and I was so glad to be a part of it. The best thing about being in Lexington was that I was with some pretty awesome people and that we both share the same feelings towards Louisville. Not to mention all the charm that Lexington has to offer.
This time of year is always the most exciting as far as cheer goes. Being able to travel with my team and mingle with all sorts of different people makes it an unforgettable experience. While we clinched the AAC regular season title, our hopes were high for the conference and NCAA tournament.
Here's a quick recap…
Memphis: Love this city! I had been two years ago for the Liberty Bowl, but we weren't able to experience Beale Street. I was excited to see what all the hype was about. It has all the charm of the south with some rock and roll thrown in the mix. The FedEx Forum was an amazing facility. The court was four feet smaller than regulation size. The court itself was okay for the players, but this meant the cheerleaders and media were squished together. We still had great seats, but we were put behind the media which made it harder to be involved in the game. Hopefully this is something that will be worked out for next year! We beat UCF Thursday night and we were ready to play UConn on Friday. With Napier just being named Player of the Year, we felt that Sean Kilpatrick was ready for anything to come his way. It's games like these that just keep replaying and replaying in your head…2 p o i n t s kept us from playing in the championship game vs. Louisville. But that sting is softened a bit after UConn just beat Michigan State to head to the Final Four.
Spokane: I have never been to Washington State before and at our selection Sunday event I was excited to see this city pop up on the screen. We landed in WA at about 11 p.m. their time which would be 2 a.m. our time. We arrived at the Double Tree Hotel sleepy eyed and tired with our fight song playing in the lobby. We were greeted by our host team who gave us cookies and lemonade to take off some of the jet lag. I must say that everyone in Washington was incredibly friendly! We had Tuesday and Wednesday to explore the city and of course I found the mall being there less than 24 hours. Wednesday we had an amazing opportunity to go to the Fairchild Air Force Base and get a tour of what happens there. Every single person who we talked to made us feel at home and a couple of them came to watch us at our game. It was nice having Bearcat fans to cheer us on even though we were on the other side of the country. If I am saying this correctly, this base trains people on how to refuel C-135's in the air so they can fly longer. ( I know that there is MUCH more to it, but this is it in a nutshell.) We later did a pep rally at the elementary school on base and it was definitely the high light of the trip. Those kids were the sweetest little things. Although we did lose to Harvard by 4, I wouldn't have spent my spring break any other way!
What else would we sleep in the night before game day? |
